Nexxus Keraphix masque review for damaged hair
Nexxus Keraphix masque review covering the keratin and black rice formula, the butter-like pouch, protein overload risk, and who gets the most from it.
In this story
Nexxus Keraphix Masque is a protein and silicone treatment in a small single-use pouch, built for bleached or heat-damaged hair that feels rough and snaps when you brush it. It makes that kind of hair feel smoother and firmer right away, though the pouch format and a protein load that some hair won't tolerate keep it out of the top tier. Nexxus Keraphix earns a 3.9 out of 5 from us.
The name has wandered over the years. Older packets say Keraphix Damage Healing Masque, the Nexxus site now calls it the Keraphix Mask for Damaged Hair, and most US retailers sell it as Keraphix Masque for Damaged Hair. It's the same 1.5 oz pouch, and you can find the Nexxus Keraphix pouches on Amazon as singles or in bulk.
Keratin and black rice, according to Nexxus
Keraphix is the Nexxus range for damaged hair, built around what the brand calls PROTEINFUSION, a blend of keratin protein and black rice. Nexxus describes the masque as a treatment for severely damaged hair that works on the inside and outside of the fiber and helps with roughness and brittleness from the first use. The brand says it chose black rice because it's one of the richest natural sources of glutamic acid, an amino acid.
On the label, the rice extract sits just ahead of the fragrance, which usually means a small amount. The proteins and smoothing agents higher up do most of the work you'll actually feel.
A butter-like cream that needs a comb
Nexxus describes the texture as butter-like, and that's the right expectation. This is a dense cream that wants to sit in clumps on the outer layer of your hair unless you spread it properly. CVS lists the scent simply as fresh. The formula is fragranced, with citronellol and linalool among the named allergens, so expect a clean scent that you'll notice.
The directions say to use it after Keraphix shampoo, apply it from the mid-lengths to the ends, comb it through so it's spread evenly, then leave it for 3 to 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Don't skip the comb. A wide-tooth one in the shower is enough to stop the outer strands getting all the product while the hair underneath gets very little. Rinse a little longer than feels necessary, because a rich cream like this can leave a slick film on the lengths if you rush.
Then there's the pouch. One 1.5 oz pouch is roughly one treatment for long or thick hair, and possibly a little short if your ends are very porous. On shoulder-length or shorter hair you can stretch it across two washes if you clip it shut. Nothing sits open in a steamy bathroom for months, and a pouch fits in a gym bag, but the packaging waste adds up, and single pouches make little sense for weekly use next to the bulk packs.
Firmer, smoother lengths from the first rinse
Expect rough, porous hair to feel noticeably smoother as soon as you rinse, and to comb out with less snagging. Lengths that felt mushy or stretchy when wet should feel a bit firmer. Shine improves, and dry ends should look tidier for a few days afterward.
Three ingredients explain most of that. Glycerin sits second on the list, right behind water, and it pulls moisture toward the hair so brittle lengths feel more supple. Hydrolyzed keratin gives damaged hair a firmer feel by clinging to weak spots on the surface, though it washes away over time and doesn't permanently rebuild anything. Dimethicone, fifth on the list, coats rough patches so strands slide past each other instead of snagging, which is likely what Nexxus means by results from the first use.
Where the masque does well
For bleached or flat-ironed hair that takes protein well, the formula is sensibly balanced. You get moisture and protein in one step, with enough silicone to make the result feel finished rather than squeaky. The short wait makes it easy to fit into a normal shower, and every treatment comes out of a fresh, sealed pouch.
It's also a low-commitment way to learn how your hair reacts to protein. One pouch tells you a lot, and you haven't opened a big tub you might end up abandoning.
Where it falls short
Protein-sensitive hair is the main concern. Some hair turns stiff and straw-like after protein treatments, often because it's low-porosity or already full of protein from other products. The amounts here are moderate, but stacked with the Keraphix shampoo and conditioner, they add up. If your ends start to feel firm and dry, space the masque out to every other week and follow with a moisture-focused conditioner.
Glycerin this high can encourage frizz in very humid weather on hair that swells easily. Silicone avoiders should skip it outright, since the smoothing leans on more than one silicone. Then there's value. A tub mask gives you many more treatments per package, and here you're buying fresh packaging every single week.
Buy it for bleached, brittle hair and skip it for protein-shy strands
Buy it if your hair is bleached or heat-damaged, medium to thick, and feels rough or breaks when you brush it. It also makes sense for travel, or for anyone who wants to test a protein mask before committing to a full jar.
Skip it if your hair goes stiff with protein or if you keep a silicone-free routine. Fine hair that's only mildly dry will probably do better with something lighter.
Nexxus next to Redken and Aussie
Redken All Soft Mega Mask is the better pick for coarse hair that's dry rather than damaged. It leans on mineral oil and silicones to seal in moisture and has very little protein, so it softens without firming. Nexxus is the better match when hair is weak and over-processed and needs some structure back.
At the lighter end, Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist is a better everyday conditioner for fine hair, but it doesn't carry the protein Keraphix does. Some people pair the two, Aussie on most washes and a Nexxus pouch once a week. For that kind of routine, the bulk Keraphix packs on Amazon are the sensible buy.
Keraphix is a solid weekly fix for over-processed hair and less suited to daily moisture
Use one pouch after shampoo once a week, spread it with a comb, give it the full five minutes and rinse well. If your hair feels stiff afterward, back off to every other week. For bleached and heat-styled hair that needs a firmer feel, 3.9 is a fair mark for a capable formula in fussy packaging, and you can order Nexxus Keraphix here.
